I'm thinking maybe a caramel color...but would that be too risky? too light?

I think that the caramel color that you had already suggested would look perfect with your almost black hair because that is just a perfect combo... but don't get chunky highlight, get the skinny, thin ones because you only get chunky highlights if you curl your hair. But definitely go for the skinny caramel colored highlights!

Don't use any bright colours like blue or blond unless you really wont to be noticed but something like red or light brown would look natural.

I used Warm bronze from garnier frutics. It looks kinda orange when you first put it in but then it gets lighter so if you do use it, dont freak out. It should work on your skintone wether you are african american or not so dont worry about it clashing. I think that caramel would look good on dark hair.
