i have heard if you put lemon juice in your hair it makes the color lighter.

and if you use coconut oil it makes your hair silky.

No matter what you use, lightening your hair WILL damage it. It's all in how badly it will be damaged that makes the difference.

Lemon juice+sunlight will lighten your hair but it will lighten it unevenly and damage it far worse than a salon procedure. Plus, you would have to spend enormous amounts in the sun to lighten your hair because of your natural shade.

Salon highlights are the best because you have someone who is experienced in lightening products to watch your hair. They know exactly what to use, and how much of it, to get your hair the color you want. Because you don't want blonde highlights, a professional can use a less harsh method for your highlights. You won't be able to tell a difference in your hair texture/ feel. I recommend a partial-highlight; they aren't too expensive and they give you an idea of highlights before committing to having your whole head done.

Good Luck.
